According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Northeastern University, millions of Americans are unknowingly drinking contaminated and potentially dangerous water each day. The study was conducted as the ongoing Flint, Michigan water crisis brought attention to drinking water hazards across the country. Perhaps not surprising, the greatest concentration of problem areas is located in Michigan. Other states with large concentrations include New Jersey, California, and North Carolina.
EWG Water Study – Toxic Drinking Water
The researchers determined areas at-risk of potential drinking water hazards by identifying different sites that can contribute to groundwater contamination. There was a focus on industrial sites, manufacturing plants, and military bases that use or are exposed to PFAS chemicals. PFAS chemicals are widely used in many consumer products, and some forms have been linked to birth defects, cancer, and other serious health problems.
To make the situation worse, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been criticized for not addressing the potential dangers of PFAs chemicals. The Safe Drinking Water Act does not establish any PFAS-chemical limit, so drinking water sources could have any PFAS-to-water ratio due to the lack of regulations. As such and for the time being, it is up to individual homeowners and property owners to do what they can to protect themselves from dangerous chemicals in their drinking water.
